Montauk HISTORIC RENOVATION I
Montauk, NY
Gluckman Mayner Architects
David Taber, Project Architect
The Deforest Cottage, one of the “7 Sisters” in the historic Montauk Association designed by McKim, Meade & White and Fredrick Law Olmstead in 1882, required a major renovation after several years of neglect. The accurate repair and/or replacement of many of the homes interior and exterior components involved probing and historical research. Existing building systems also required replacement and the original cast iron radiators were refurbished and re-used. Stainless steel kitchen cabinet units, a glass shower box and minimal shelving units within the library represent modern insertions juxtaposing the traditional vocabulary of the original interior.
